Becoming a doctor's assistant through home study
What does a doctor's assistant do?
A doctor's assistant is the first point of contact at a GP practice: you schedule appointments, assess how urgent complaints are (triage) and carry out medical procedures such as measuring blood pressure, syringing ears and dressing wounds. Doctor's assistants also work in hospitals and public health services.
How long does the programme take?
The accredited MBO 4 programme usually takes 24 months through home study, including a mandatory placement at a GP practice. Basic programmes without an MBO diploma take 9 to 12 months and suit orientation or refreshing your knowledge.
Is the diploma accredited?
The MBO 4 variants are Crebo-registered and lead to the same accredited diploma as a regional college. GP practices almost always ask for this diploma; certificates from basic programmes are not equivalent but can be a stepping stone.
